At Voice Automated, we had a focus group a few years back on creating the ultimate medical dictation and electronic record application.
After some time brain storming on the white board, we came up with a light weight device the floats around the doctor’s head and when they talk, the device instantly translates their speech into usable patient information. Oh yea and I forgot, it’s free!
Well we are not there yet but with the latest announcement about an advanced suite of Dragon Medical Mobile technologies and solutions from Nuance we are one step closer to our white board dream detailed above.
I had a chance to view this technology on a recent trip to Boston and it looks promising.
To get an idea of how the technology will work, be sure to try the General English version of Dragon Dictation (available for the iPhone) to dictate short emails or text messages. A few friends of mine, that know I sell Dragon Medical Solutions, asked me about that application at a restaurant. I downloaded the application onto a friend’s iPhone in a busy restaurant and dictated an email at 98% accuracy. I then handed the iPhone back to my friend and he dictated another email with the same result. Absolutely amazing!

Dragon Medical Mobile Dictation
Nuance recently demonstrated a healthcare version of its popular and first-of-its-kind Dragon Dictation app, which is based on Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition technology at this year’s HIMSS Show.
The app allows clinicians to dictate patient notes, emails and text messages instead of typing them on a mobile device. With Dragon Medical Mobile Dictation clinicians can dictate and capture information via a smartphone in real-time without having to return to the desktop, or rely on the keyboard or touch screen. And because Dragon Medical Mobile Dictation is a server-based app, all of the speech recognition is performed in the cloud using advanced real-time streaming capabilities.
Dragon Medical Mobile Search
Nuance recently demonstrated a healthcare version of its Dragon Search app, providing an intuitive voice-powered solution that gives clinicians a smarter way to search for medical information. Utilizing the same server-based speech recognition technology as the Dragon Medical Mobile Dictation app, the Search app will allow clinicians to simply speak a request to conduct fast and easy searches on various medical websites. A unique display carousel will show search results simultaneously from a variety of popular websites, such as MedScape, MedLine, Epocrates and Google. The app will also help identify correct coding information to ensure that clinical services are appropriately billed and accurately documented. Dragon Medical Mobile Search will be the first Dragon Medical Mobile App made available by April 30th.
Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder
Nuance recently demonstrated a voice-capture app that will allow clinicians to conduct on-the-go dictation on a smartphone. Once recorded, the clinicians’ voice file is forwarded through Nuance’s background speech recognition technology and onto transcription where a high-quality draft document is created and then sent back to the clinician for review and sign-off. The Dragon Medical Recorder app is designed for healthcare organizations that leverage either of Nuance’s enterprise-wide speech-enabled dictation and transcription solutions, eScription or the Dictaphone Enterprise Speech System.
Dragon Medical Mobile SDK
Nuance recently demonstrated its Dragon Medical Mobile SDK (software developer kit) that will be offered to third-party healthcare information technology companies and partners. This SDK will allow developers, including EHR vendors, to build solutions that can incorporate Nuance’s Dragon Medical Mobile capabilities.

Dragon Medical Feature Comparison
Many interested doctors and office managers ask which edition of Dragon Medical is right for them.
There are 3 versions of Dragon Medical:
1. Dragon Medical - Small Practice Edition
2. Dragon Medical
3. Dragon Medical Enterprise
Why 3 editions you may ask? Nuance understands that not all medical organizations have the same medical transcription needs.To download a complete comparison matrix of all versions click here. Or for an overview, please read below:
All Dragon Medical Editions are categorized by speech recognition accuracy, dictation features, dictation modes, transcription support, microphone support, commands and macros, operating system support, application support and admin and network support.
Possibly the best way to understand each edition is to know what is not in a particular edition.
Dragon Medical Enterprise: This edition has it all, nothing missing here.
Dragon Medical Edition: This edition does not have DragonConnect Compatability
DragonConnect™ Feature. This feature allows voice and text files to be sent to back-end transcription for final editing (optional). Physicians can have their voice-dictated files routed to a transcriptionist who can review the physician’s voice file and the Dragon-transcribed file and make corrections prior to returning it to the physician for review and signature.
Voice Automated's transcription service can be connected directly to DragonConnect for seemless transcription workflow solutions.
Dragon Medical Small Practice Edition: This edition of Dragon Medical does not have:
1. Radiology or Pathology Vocabularies: Generally only used in a hospital setting.
If you are in private practice and need one of these vocabularies - Dragon Medical Small Practice is not for you.
2. Hidden Mode: This feature allows users of EMR/Practice Management/RIS and other medical softwares to dictate while reviewing lab or radiology test results and save when finished anywhere in their medical software.
3. Correction only profile: This feature allows the creation of a correction only profile which can be used by a correctionist/transcriptionist to make corrections to text transcribed by Dragon Medical.
4. Dragon Connect Feature: Not provided in Dragon Medical Small Practice - see feature description above.
5. Dragon Templates with Voice Fields: This feature preloads a set of voice templates and macros with predefined normals. i.e. normal eyes, normal system exam, normal physical exam etc. - If you already have this information then don't worry and stay with Dragon Medical Small Practice Edition.
6. MyCommands Window: Show the user commands only in command browser window.
7. Encrypt macros for distribution: This features allows commands to be locked down to ensure all users are using the same commands.
